Twitter @LKenneyrugs

I have been thinking about Maud Lewis again....maybe as it is near Christmas, the season Maud loved. If you are on twitter, check out @LKenneyrugs as I am posting a few of my Maud rugs..reminding people that the film Maudie was not a documentary.

It is tricky when you base a movie on a true story.

There are many people alive today that are upset by Maudie...they knew Maud and Ev..and about the Poor Farm. They didn't like the sugarcoating that went on in the movie.

I am going to sign off for 2020.

I want to wish you a lovely holiday...and hang in there.

International Rug hooking Day.

Happy International Rug Hooking Day.
I am so grateful to the women who first took a feed bag, ripped it open, and hooked with worn clothing so many years ago.
And, here is to the women today who continue to push rug hooking in new and exciting ways....keep going ladies.

Workshop

I had the good fortune to take a drawing class with Tom Forrestall the end of July in Parrsboro.
Had some laughs, learned a lot and the restaurant close by had the most excellent veggie burgers.

Pride.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that the 1964 Civil Rights Act barring sex discrimination in the workplace protects LGBTQ employees from being fired because of their sexual orientation.

Good news....but postponed due to Covid.

Dear Laura Kenney,

Thank you for all the thoughtfulness, care, and work you put into your submission to Atlantic
Vernacular. Your work Crime Scene was selected, but unfortunately, the exhibition itself is
postponed until further notice due to industry-wide disruptions caused by the global pandemic.

Not this year.

Well, dang it.
I was expecting this announcement but still it stings.
The Festival is like Christmas to me.
But, what can you do...safety first.
See you next year.

Mass shooting in Canada's Ocean Playground

I don't really know if we are this innocent place we are made out to be...Canada's Ocean Playground....that is what is on our license plates.

There is racism, poverty and crime here.
Are we really a casserole kind of people?

Are we the kind of place Maud painted?

I don't want us to be known as the province where that horrible mass shooting took place.

All I know is I don't usually lock my door and I have started to.
I usually go for  walks but I am scared to go out.
I am letting the bad guy win.
I know the fear will go and we will return to our "happy folk" kind of ways...if that is what we ever were.

Grieving

Canada's worse mass shooting took place close to my neck of the woods yesterday.

Love and peace to Nova Scotia.

Pandemic

Strange times, indeed.
I pretty much stay home most of the time and hook so not much has changed for me in terms of my lifestyle...but galleries are closing, exhibits postponed ...so there is that.

Also,

I worry about my Mom and sister and the health care workers.
I worry when my kids will go back to school.
I worry about the people losing their jobs.
I worry about the homeless.
I worry about seniors.

But all I can do is hook....and continue to spray everything with a 10% solution of  bleach.

Hang in there people...this too shall pass.

World Events

I hooked this rug last year.

I was just being silly.

It was a year or two ago that a  Maud Lewis exhibit was held in China, along with a few other NS artists and it struck me as Maud had never been out of the province and  her artwork being shown so far from her home......if she were alive today imagine how she would feel.

So I hooked up her three cats..with masks to protect against the pollution...and the Chinese flag in the background.

Now when I look at this rug, all I can think of is the coronavirus.

World events can bring a new meaning to art.

Take care of each other.

RIP Sobeys Bag

A few words.

I won't be seeing you fly down the street or stuck in a tree.
You won't be lining my garbage container or in my car in case someone barfs. I won't be sticking you in my luggage for laundry or using you to hold my receipts for taxes.
Most importantly you won't be in the ocean or the landfill..bravo Sobeys.
Note: 6 Sobey's bags, a Dollarama bag were used in the making of this hooking.
