Sensorius

"Nope, we not all in the same boat"

This rug can be experienced by people who are visually impaired. There is an audio description of the piece at the gallery and people are free to touch the rug. I used sari-ribbon for the sky which has a rough feel to it, Judy's dress is hooked from soft roving and I raised the loops for the water so that the rug can be "seen" with the hands.

Thanks again to Bruno Vinhas for making art accessible.

SENSORIUS: WHERE THE SKIN MEETS THE EYE
Removing barriers is the way to create an environment that will give equal opportunities for the population as a whole. Integration, respect, adaptability, and challenging stereotypical portrayals can and will generate a healthy change in attitudes. Accessible spaces and works early on in the curatorial design process have been the primary focus of Sensorius: Where The Skin Meets The Eye. With works from Alex Antle (NL -CA) / Ashleigh Downey (IRE) / Five Island Rug Hooking group (NL -CA) / Jade Yumang (PH/ BC-CA/US) / Janet Peter (NL - CA) / Jennifer Young (NL -CA) / Joanne B Kaar (SCT) / June Walker (NL-CA) / Kelly Bruton (NL- CA) / Laura Kenney (NS -CA) / Sarah Albu (QC-CA)

Science Over Politics

I was over at a friends place this afternoon and he had CNN on.

And...they were talking about Republicans putting doubt into people's minds about the covid vaccine..heartbreaking, irresponsible stuff.

I made this rug a few weeks ago, and it is a take on Joyce Wieland's 1968 "Reason over Passion" quilt she made when Canada had another Trudeau as PM.

Science over Politics will be shown at CBU Art Gallery in lovely Sydney, NS next year.

Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design, in collaboration with Parks Canada, is pleased to announce the opening of Ground Rules: The Before and After, an exciting collaborative exhibition based on an experiential learning residency program in Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

The four-day residency program took place in spring 2019, in the spectacular Cape Breton Highlands National Park. Fourteen Nova Scotia artists with diverse backgrounds explored new ideas inspired by the natural landscapes of the Highlands, while interacting with scientists, park interpreters and creative leaders.

The Ground Rules residency provided participating artists with the opportunity to explore new ideas and ways of working in their medium, connect to their individual heritage and discover how scientific processes shape the natural world.
Ground Rules: The Before and After will be on display at the Centre’s Loft from March 1 – April 24, 2021.

Tonight!

ART ROUNDTABLE

Kenney, a rughooker, draws on this historical folk tradition and creates contemporary works that comment on issues today. She often includes the figure of Judy in her work. In light of the pandemic, Judy takes an important role, as Kenney notes: “Sometimes Judy, a character who often appears in my rugs, will come in like a superhero to fix things. To try in her way to make things right. Maybe she couldn't save the victims of the pandemic, but she could do her best to ensure the victims are remembered.” Learn more by visiting the gallery’s website. #acadiagallery #aloneatacadia #novascotia

Dancing Rabbits.

A lot of hookers in NS knew Linda Macdonald. She was a teacher, shop owner and she saved the Bluenose Patterns. She past away suddenly a few years ago and is missed.
This dancing rabbits pattern is a Bluenose Pattern I picked up at an auction her family had and
Judy just had to dance with these big bunnies...even though they look a tad angry.
Thinking of Linda..and when we can all can dance together again.
